Mon Hue 01

Mon Hue is an up-and-coming chain of attractive restaurants that offers a good introduction to the cuisine from the old imperial capital of Central Vietnam, Hue. They have about 6 chains now in Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon. I’ve visited 3 of them and so far I find this one at Phu My Hung being the best in terms of space and cleanliness.

Bun Bo Hue has to be the most famous food that comes out of Central Vietnam. A very popular Vietnamese soup rice vermicelli dish, the predominant flavor is of lemon grass and the broth is sometimes mildly spicy. You should at least try it once, be it in a Mon Hue restaurant or not, for a variation of the all time favorite Vietnamese beef noodles.

The dish below, call Com Hen, is the reason Mon Hue gets my repeat visits. To start with, don’t you find that the presentation alone already win half the score? :-) And what you see on the surface is not the end of it all. There are yet more vegetables and chopped cucumber underneath that deep bowl. Com Hen is a rice dish that comes with sauteed baby clams and pork. It is also served with a bowl of clam juice in which you are supposed to add to your Com Hen, else the whole dish will turn out a little too dry. Also note that the default amount of chili placed there may be a bit too much for one. Be warned :-) Com Hen cost 28,000vnd which is only about US$1.50.

Another dish from Mon Hue that I recommend you to try is that Banh Beo. The following is quoted from Wikipedia: ‘A banh beo (literally “water fern cake”) is a variety of small steamed rice cake or rice pancake in Vietnamese cuisine. It is white in color and typically features a dimple in the center, which is filled with savory ingredients including chopped dried or fresh shrimp, scallions, mung bean paste, crispy fried shallots, fish sauce, rice vinegar, and oil. It is considered most typical of the cuisine of Hue, the ancient royal capital located in the center of Vietnam’. Banh Beo from Mon Hue comes in a set serving of 7 and cost 26,000vnd, about US$1.40.

The drink below is call Che Nhan Boc Hot Sen which is actually Longan wrapped with lotus seed. Taste good. Cost: 22,000vnd (about US$1.20)

If you are a cheapo like me, just ask for the ice tea which comes FREE! :-) Even if you get the hot tea, it is also FREE flowing :-)

Gotta tell ya my story: I had Banh Beo at a restaurant just behide Cho Ben Thanh. I ordered a combo dish. Unfortunately I felt sick from that; to the point I almost had to cancel my flight to Singapore. I had a fever & upset stomach. Luckily I felt better & made the trip. And you know that a fever at the airport is automatic detention ’cause of H1N1.
BTW, the featured Restaurant is very nice! I think it has a branch on Hai Ba Trung St (across from the church); but not as fancy as this one. I ate there too but it was fine.

Alo Paul, thank you for your story and sorry to hear about the upset stomach. Did you try the trick of dinning only in places that are crowded? Reason being if it’s crowded, the food should be fresh, never mind if it’s good or not.

You are right about having one Mon Hue in Hai Ba Trung. It’s on street number 302.

I’ve just returned from Phan Thiet (about 200km from HCMC) on a 50% work and 50% holiday. Working now to sort out the pictures for my post on this very fun beach area of Vietnam. In the meantime, the next post is on getting a tourist visa when visiting Vietnam. :-)
